Remember When in Jackson

I met my friend Gordon for lunch a couple of weeks ago. We were meeting at the Backyard Burger located right across the street from the University of MS Medical Center. They had this print of "Remember When" by Mark Millet, a look back at downtown Jackson back in the 1950's. I've seen some of Mark's prints before, but had never seen this one. I like it and I remember when downtown Jackson was the place to be for shopping and entertainment.

There are two prints above--click on the first print and you get a large detailed image bigger than the screen. Click on the second image and you'll get a screen size version of the print. To see more of Mark Millet's prints, click on this link to Mark Millet's prints.

Was the Hotel Heidelberg west of the Paramount? I'm also curious about that tower(?) and when did that go?

Alan, it's good to have you back on the blog. Are you now in the northwest or are you still in New Orleans?

My memory of the old downtown Jackson is so poor. In this drawing, going from the Paramount on the right towards the Old Capitol Building in the distance is going east. The buildings on the right are the Paramount Theatre, the Primos restaurant, the Royal Hotel, and then the Hotel Heidelberg. The short part of the Hotel Heidelberg that's directly on Capitol Street was begun in 1922. The taller part that you see on the far right of the drawing was added on in 1937. The Heidelberg closed its doors November 11, 1974.

Thanks, Frank--but I've never left the blog. I read two blogs everyday and you're one of them. You keep me connected to my roots.
Frank, after clicking on the first photo, I see the Heidelberg. I've got great memories of downtown Jackson-McRae's, Kennington's, Lamar Theater, King Edward Hotel...seems it all went away with the arrival of Jackson Mall on Woodrow Wilson.

Oh,we left New Orleans in early June, now living in Seattle.
